My offshore rods are stored in a garage with windows,  ride in a rack in the bed of a pick up to the marina and then ride 75+ miles out and 75+ miles back in the rocket launchers and pole holders of my boat.  
These covers keep the sunlight(UV) off of my rods when stored, the road dirt out of my reels when driving and the salt water off of rods and reels when not in use (important since not every rod is used on a trip).
